iksre So great to see new music from the supremely talented Luminem. And the wait was worth it. The original piece is absolutely stunning - emotive and blissful (as we know her to be) - and it's fantastic to hear such a variety of different versions from the other artists involved.

about

Luminem was inspired to write a piece of piano music called Birth of Elements after listening to the audio book Living From A Place of Surrender by Michael Singer.

“There is a section of the book where Michael speaks about the process of the Big Bang, and how the first elements of the universe were initially created from plasma and went on to birth stars and the universe, which I found really fascinating. There are 92 elements (i.e. the periodic table) that make up our universe, but I had never before really reflected on how these were initially formed.”

Birth of Elements is a neoclassical journey which embarks upon strong, deep bass notes and a gently undulating melody in the upper keys. It then moves into an emotive progression with a cinematic feel to it, which alternates between two different sections, slowly building with intensity each time they are played.

The piece culminates with a dramatic passage, reminiscent of explosive, interstellar forces before transitioning to the gentle melody from the introduction. This closes the piece, signifying the cyclical nature of our intergalactic evolution.

“I then shared this piece of piano music with a diverse range of artists and asked them to do their own rework of the piece, taking inspiration from the element they most resonated with. The idea being for them to show how one base element (i.e. piano melody) can be completely transformed into a new universe (i.e. piece of music) through the lens of a different artist. This felt like a fitting analogy, drawing a parallel between the creation of the universe and the creation of music.”

“It has been a wonderful process collaborating with each of these talented artists and seeing the beautifully unique music they have created, all sparked from the one piano piece.”
