about

Luminem’s debut EP works as a coherent set of pieces, while also demonstrating diversity of composition within the Neoclassical genre. This EP brings together music written over a decade, and was recorded mostly during the first Melbourne lockdown in 2020.

The first track and title piece, Back Home, captures the feeling of returning to Melbourne after living in London, and being back in the family home. Using emotive piano with subtle pauses, Back Home flows naturally with expressive tempo and dynamics.

Climbing is an uplifting piece. It takes you on a journey of expansion, reaching for new heights as the music progresses. Inspired by an indoor climbing session, it represents both a physical and an emotional interpretation of the title.

The middle track Mind Stroll is quite a departure from the first two. With a more sombre undertone, it is an exploration through the darker recesses of one’s mind. Featuring Phoebe Dubar aka IKSRE on viola which brings an added depth of emotion, there is an unresolved tension that carries throughout the piece.

The First Camellia was inspired by the first bloom of a camellia bush which sat outside the window where Luminem played piano. She created this elegant tribute to the flower.

The final track of the EP is a calming and relaxed piece with jazz elements called Seaside Saunter. The piano naturally ebbs and flows throughout, echoing the gentle lapping of the ocean and seagulls in the background.

“This piece was inspired by my parents, who used to take frequent walks along the Bayside beaches together. It was written after my father was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. With so much fear and uncertainty about Dad’s future, I wanted to write something that was peaceful and comforting. I also wanted to convey a sense of appreciating the moment together, while it lasted. I dedicate this Back Home EP to my dad Lindsay Graham who took such pleasure in listening to my music, especially in his final months.”
